Aquariums are one of the most stunning feats of human engineering. The ability to harness and view aquatic environments on any scale would be impossible without the ability to maintain the correct water conditions. The complex nitrogen cycle, filtration system, currents, lighting, and chemical balance of an aquarium is dependent on its thermodynamic properties. The ability to maintain healthy bacterial colonies that are able to convert ammonia waste into harmless nitrates is critical. These bacterial colonies are very sensitive to even a few degrees of temperature fluctuation. In the case of tropical salt water corals and most of the animal life that occupy them, improper or rapid changes in water temperature is deadly.
